The Eighth Annual Beginners Beekeeping School will be held on April 16, 2016, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham. The one-day school is designed to help those interested in Beekeeping to understand what is involved in starting the hobby and becoming active in beekeeping. Our beginning sessions will introduce the participants to bees and explain how they work, what it takes to safely handle bees and where to purchase the necessary equipment. Students will even be able to "suit up" and observe while a live beehive is opened and examined.
For those that already have bees, intermediate sessions are available to help learn about bee diseases, proper hive management for honey and how to raise queens. We have added an advanced section this year that allows those that have attended the school before to pursue more intense subjects.
The school begins at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham and concludes at 5 p.m. with the drawing for five major door prizes. A catered Bar-B-Que meal complete with Blue Bell Ice Cream (we ARE in Brenham!) for dessert is included in the admission price. A vendors area will be available with items to purchase. The Central Texas Beekeepers has a limited number of complete, painted hives available for purchase. These hives are ready for bees but do not include the bees.
The cost of the school is $55 for the first adult from a family and $50 for additional adults (18 years of age and older) from the same household. Children under 18 are $20 each. Last year there were 630 people in attendance at the school. Participation is expected to exceed 700 this year.
