Your WildLife Society Supports Youth

Enhancing local wildlife and thereby improving overall quality of life in Washington County is the Society mission. We are particularly focusing on youth education, using wildlife as the foundation for many types of instruction and experience. For example, at the past January 2011 Society meeting we had interesting and encouraging presentations by two educators about successful public school programs in our county based on wildlife as the theme.

These two presenters, Allison Bentke, a Brenham ISD 8th grade science teacher, and Helen Holdsworth, Executive Director for Texas Brigades and Vice President of Conservation Legacy for the Texas Wildlife Association, explained the Learning Across New Dimensions in Science (L.A.N.D.S.) and the Texas Brigades programs, respectively. Adult members of our society have been key advocates of both of these excellent programs. In fact, much of the L.A.N.D.S. and Texas Brigades success is credited to some of our friends.

Your Washington County Wildlife Society officers and directors are becoming more involved with both programs. We are also building closer ties with wildlife majors in the Blinn College Agriculture Department. We have recently created a new position of WCWS Youth Liaison. Jon Wellmann, a sophomore at Breham High is the first to serve in this new position. WCWS supports the youth of Washington County!
