Upcoming Events

October 22, 2008 - Fourth Annual Youth Shooting & Hunter Safety Event - Nails Creek State Park

Nails Creek State Park, Lake Somerville. Local high school students from Washington County involved in wildlife and agriculture classes are invited to come out for a fun, safe, hands-on opportunity to learn about hunter ethics and safety and give them the opportunity to shoot different types of firearms and bows. Students are placed in small groups and rotated through eight stations where they receive one-on-one instruction. Students will also enjoy a picnic lunch provided by Washington County Wildlife Society. It takes a lot of people to put on this event and any interested volunteers will be welcome. Contact us at info@wcwildlife.org or call Richard Thames at (979) 278-3053.

The South Central Texas Prescribe Burn Coop is giving notification of three upcoming prescribed burn training opportunities for you so that you can get them on your calendar now

November 7, 2008: The Fayette Co. AgriLife Extension Service and USDA-NRCS for Fayette and Colorado counties are holding a workshop on Friday 11/7 from 1-5 pm at the new ag building in La Grange. This is planned to be very similar to the workshop done last February in Bleiblerville in case you missed that one. There will be speakers from AgriLife, NRCS, Nation Weather Service, and TPWD. Topics will cover Fire Weather Considerations, Planning the Burn, Site Preparation including Firebreaks, Rules and Regulations, and Management of the Fuel on the Land Prior to the Burn. No actual burn is planned. There is no fee for the training. Contact Scott Willey in La Grange for more details. sawilley@ag.tamu.edu

December 13, 2008: Greg Pleasant, TPWD biologist for Lee and Fayette County, will be holding his annual prescribed burn workshop. This is usually at his farm near Giddings and will include an actual demonstration burn if weather is suitable. More details will be made available when plans are firm. There is no fee for the training. Greg’s e-mail is tpwbiologist@bluebon.net

January 17, 2009: TPWD will hold its annual prescribed burn training at the Neasloney WMA in Gonzalez county near Luling. Typically this training starts around 9 am and runs until mid afternoon. Topics are usually similar to the one planned for La Grange 11/7 and include a demonstration burn if weather is suitable. There is no fee, as I recall. David Veale is the contact on this one. His e-mail is monwma@the-cia.net
